The key to thriving in the volatile world of software development is building powerful API's that can power a host of separate clients to run the desired operations. If your building a webapp, at the very least an internal API will make building the front-end of your app much easier. In most cases I prefer to use an MVC framework such as CodeIgniter, Kohana or FuelPHP to cut time and cost.
